Know Thy WWW: Key Differences Between a Website and a Blog

For people working in the online environment, the difference between blog and website is very clear, but for the rest of you, we’re going to try to explain things in both technical and practical terms.

Monologue vs. dialogue

A site consists of a group of static pages that show exactly what the site owner wants you to see. It’s a static brochure, a monologue, a piece of information which travels in one direction.

A blog is totally different. The word “blog” comes from “weblog” which means“web log”, so it a written record of messages sent and received. So, the person who posted on the blog, sends a message. At the same time, you as a reader of that blog can interact through comments, which makes the blog to be more like a “dialogue”.

Dynamic content vs. static content

The blog pages are dynamic, changing in appearance when a new post is added,the new post will always appear first on the page, while the older ones become “older posts”. A site containing static pages, each page has its well-established place in a well-established structure, which cannot be altered by comments.

Communication

Since we’re talking about dynamic content above, it’s always a good idea to have different people writing on the blog and website. Think of a blog as the human part of the company. So you need a person who is able to deliver content which is easy to understand, that is also empathic with the readers. A growing trend with companies is to hire third party companies, which provide guest posting services. This way, the person who will write on the blog will not have the same perspective as a person working for a corporation.

A website consists of pages, a blog consists of posts.

Most of the times, you browse the site using the menu. Browsing the blog is a little more difficult, but not very different. Posts are organized by “tags” and included in categories (optional) or ordered by date.

Optimization

Another difference between a blog and a website consists in optimizing for search engines. Usually, optimizing the site is quite rare, the owner choosing keywords and the section wherehe wants to fit the site in search engines. Blog posts are indexed faster than the pages of a site. Optimization is a mandatory component of a SEO strategy.

The difference between a blog and a website can be negligible depending on the purpose of creation. If you are a company or you are a person with a great idea, it would be better to opt for a site. If you just want to keep a “diary” of thoughts and opinions, a blog is the way to go. But also think outside the box: many companies today have both a website and a blog which serve for different purposes:
